What in the world are these beautiful golden flakes inside our beautiful Acacia Clover honey?
Bees will cap honeycomb with a thin layer of beeswax when the honey is sufficiently dehydrated for storage. They ensure the moisture content is low enough so the honey never spoils!
Wax cappings are the freshest beeswax found in the hive and it also contains some propolis. Before capping the honey, the bees will add some enzymes to the honey for best preservation.
In addition to its health benefits, beeswax is also fun to eat! At first, the texture is like gum but then it can get very dry and hard. So if you want to swallow the wax (which is safe to do), do so sooner than later!
